1501 steps
Outside the hotel room stretched a cacophony of sounds, smells and traces of humans at practice. Each day we navigated this confusion photographing 1501 steps of the Calangute-Mapusa road from the teeming centre of Mapusa to the outreach and relative quietness of Jerome’s Holiday Inn.
Combining photographic documentary practice with design, concerned with sustainability, we documented life along the road, a vibrant microcosm, characterised by the heavy traffic, pollution and ever changing work and living spaces.
Robert’s images are accompanied by my collages created from found objects randomly selected from roadside debris, thus resurrecting the discarded and unloved as well as creating new meaning in a story yet to be fully told.
Navigating the cows wandering the road, dodging motorbikes and tripping over roots became a daily routine. In this sense, Mapusa turned out to be a testing space in which to begin our collaborative work and generating lasting impressions of the human condition.
