1. Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder

This cover design reflects the increasing confusion taking hold of Sophie, the main protagonist, as she is confronted with philosophical questions about her own existence. The branches from two different parts of a hedge in the family garden—the girl’s hiding place—are getting increasingly intertwined as Sophie begins to question everything.

2. A day in the life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

This cover design reflects the emphasis on food rations in the life of the prisoners in a Russian gulag. Early in the book, Solzhenitsyn describes rituals surrounding the consumption of small amounts of fish. The prisoners leave only the bones on the table. Once the table is covered in bones, they are being swiped onto the ground where they make a crunching sound as the prisoners step on them. Therefore the number 1 has been crafted from boiled fish bones.

3. Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino

The cities described in Calvino’s book have different and often surreal identities. Marco Polo, who describes them to Kublai Khan, ventures deep into the psyche of each city. Towards the end of the book, he increasingly uncovers hidden decay which is usually concealed by a shiny facade. The cracks that begin to show, uncovering corruption and neglect, have been portrayed in this hand-lettering piece.
